We believe the quality of our products depend on the people who make them, and we work hard to create a workplace that people want to be part of for the long haul. Many of our employees have been with Red Hen for years. Here are some of the reasons why.

Respect for your time and energy

  • We don’t ask staff to rely on tips or unpredictable schedules to make a living — we’ve designed our workplace differently.
  • No tipping -- on purpose
We don’t think a customer’s mood, spending habits, or tipping culture should determine someone’s paycheck. Instead, we pay consistent, fair wages across all roles — and we expect consistently excellent work from everyone, every shift. Learn More.
  • Equal pay expectations
We believe the work of a dishwasher, a line cook, a barista, and a bread baker all deserve equal respect. Our wages reflect that. There’s no tip-based pay gap between customer-facing and behind-the-scenes jobs.
  • Flexibility when you need it
Life happens. We support shift swaps and reasonable time-off requests, and we encourage staff to plan ahead so they can take time away when needed.

Open Positions

Night Bakery Fulfillment & Production - Night Shift (7pm-3am)

Red Hen Baking Company is looking for a reliable, detail-oriented Fulfillment & Production team member to join our night crew in Middlesex. Fulfillment & Production team members play an important role in making sure our bread gets accurately sliced, packed, and ready for delivery to restaurants, co-ops, Red Hen Café, and other wholesale customers throughout Vermont and upper New Hampshire.

While packing and slicing are the primary responsibilities of this position, this role will grow to support bakery responsibilities such as evaluating bread quality, feeding starters, baking bread and supporting bread production. The goal is to develop into a versatile member of the night crew who can help wherever needed to keep the night's work moving.

What You'll Do

  • Slice bread for wholesale customers and Red Hen café deliveries.
  • Pack bread accurately and efficiently for our delivery drivers and wholesale accounts.
  • Use Global Bake, our bakery management system, to confirm the correct products and quantities for each customer.
  • Identify and troubleshoot discrepancies between orders and available bread, using good judgment to determine next steps and communicating with drivers and the Accounts & Operations Manager when needed.
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Communicate regularly with the Accounts & Operations Manager about problems, recurring issues, and opportunities to make our systems more accurate or efficient.
  • Work closely with bakers and other members of the night crew to make sure production, packing, and delivery work smoothly together.
  • Learn to identify bread quality and participate in quality control.
  • Support other night production work, including assisting with baking and other bakery tasks.
  • Keep production, slicing, packing, and shared work areas clean and organized.

What We're Looking For

No previous bakery experience necessary; we can teach you the bread and our systems. You do need to be someone who:

  • Is dependable and comfortable working a consistent overnight schedule.
  • Works efficiently and accurately and takes pride in getting things right.
  • Can think on their feet and use good judgment when something unexpected happens.
  • Communicates clearly and isn't afraid to ask questions or flag a problem.
  • Enjoys being part of a team and is willing to help wherever the night's work requires it.

At Red Hen, getting the bread packed correctly is important, but so is making sure the whole night works. We're looking for someone who sees themselves as part of that bigger team.

Pay, Schedule & Benefits

This is a 35–40 hour/week position, with shifts generally running from 7:00 p.m.–3:00 a.m.

Night Fulfillment & Production team members typically start between $18.00 - $18.50/hour, with re-evaluation of pay at regular review intervals beginning after the first month. Fully trained (core) Fulfillment & Production team members earn $20.50 to $24.50, with our most experienced team members earning upwards of that.

Employees working 30+ hours per week are eligible for Red Hen’s full benefits package, including health insurance, paid time off, retirement benefits, disability insurance, and other employee benefits.
