Learn more about how we got here and what keeps us going
The Origins of Red Hen
Red Hen Baking Co. was established in 1999 in Duxbury, Vermont by Randy George and Eliza Cain with the goal of baking and delivering fresh bread to local stores 7 days a week. With the immense support of our community, Red Hen now employs a staff of over 50 and has expanded to include our own cafe. We still bake and deliver freshly baked bread 7 days a week to coops, independent grocery stores and restaurants across Vermont and New Hampshire.
Regional Grain Sourcing
When Red Hen was first established, we thought it impossible to grow grain in the Northeast that could rival the quality produced in the Midwest. However, today we are grateful and proud to say 99% of wheat and rye used at Red Hen is grown and milled within 300 miles of the bakery. We even have our own stone mill on-site specifically for the purpose of milling grain from local farmers.
Our Mission
It is always been our belief that a business should do more than simply provide the goods and services that are their main reason for being. You may remember the fairy tale that we named the bakery for. Well, our tale of the Little Red Hen turned out a little differently. In our story, the barnyard animals did help out. We simply wouldn’t be here without the community support that we have gotten from day one. Like any good hen, we feel a responsibility to do what we can to nurture the community that has nurtured us.
Working at Red Hen
At Red Hen, we believe the quality of our products depend on the people who make them, and we work hard to create a workplace that people want to be part of for the long haul. Many of our employees have been here for years. That doesn’t happen by chance. It comes from a culture of respect, thoughtful benefits, and a clear path for advancement.
